How To Assess Your Tires

Tires are important components of your vehicle that you need to rely on for traction and stability when driving. As such, it’s important for you to inspect your tires often and assess their condition to see if they need to be replaced in a service department.

Service Tech

Measure the Tread

You need to have enough tire tread to be able to grip the road and better handle slick road conditions. You can check the tread by performing the penny test. Simply stick an upside-down penny in the tread. If the top of Lincoln’s head is visible, the tread has worn down too low, and you may need to replace your tires.

Look For Damage

You should examine the sidewalls and tread of your tires for any bulges, cuts, scrapes, cracks or punctures. If you notice damage on your tires, you should take your vehicle to a service department to have your tires properly inspected.

View the Tire Pressure

The pressure in your tires can fluctuate with the changing temperatures, which can be dangerous for driving. To ensure your tires are properly inflated, take off the valve stem cap and then evenly place the gauge head on the valve stem. Press the gauge firmly, stopping the hissing sound. You can then pick up the gauge and look at the tire pressure, which you can compare to the recommended tire pressure for your specific vehicle.

Know the Age

Even if you have enough tread depth and your tires appear to be in good condition, you might still need to replace your tires if they’re getting up there in age. According to industry standards, your tires should not be more than 10 years older than the manufacture date.
